Talk radio weighs in on taking blame for the Arizona shooting

Gabrielle Giffords From the moment Arizona Sheriff Clarence Dupnik stated that talk radio faced some blame for the assassination of a Federal judge and the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, talk radio took to the air in defense. Only a limited few pointed fingers, including Rush Limbaugh, who blamed both the media and the left, saying "They’re trying to link this shooting to me, to Sarah Palin, to talk radio. There’s no logic in any of the assertions they’re trying to make." Others pointed the finger of blame not at a political party or guns, but squarely on the alleged shooter. Glenn Beck posted on his website, "I hold those responsible for the violence, responsible for the violence. I denounce those who attempt to blame political opponents for the acts of madmen." Tucson KQTH-FM (104.1) host Jon Justice says, "It’s like blaming Jodie Foster for the individual who shot Ronald Reagan.” Talkers Magazine publisher Michael Harrison goes a step further, telling Radio-Info, "Talk show hosts should defend each other ... hosts on both sides should defend the right to criticize. I would prefer civil discussion. [The shooter] doesn't fit the profile of a conservative. Freedom of speech is the foundation of our nation." However, some are under orders to tone down the rhetoric. Fox News president Roger Ailes has ordered his show hosts to be less confrontational, including radio talkers Beck and Sean Hannity. Ailes was also upset that some tried to link both Fox News and the Tea Party to the shootings. You can read more of Ailes' comments here.
