The FEC dismisses a complaint against KFYI, Phoenix and former host JD Hayworth
A complaint filed in December with the Federal Election Commission claimed that having former KFYI-AM (550) afternoon drive talk show host JD Hayworth on the air despite talk of a Senate run amounted to “an illegal corporate in-kind contribution.” The Arizona Republic reports the complaint was filed by former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods, an ally of Sen. John McCain. Hayworth is now an announced candidate, competing with McCain in the Republican primary. Hayworth left Clear Channel’s KFYI before he formally announced his US Senate candidacy. While this complaint filed by Woods was dropped, there is still another complaint sitting at the Federal Communications Commission, filed by the McCain campaign. It alleges that Hayworth for months had promoted on the air that he would challenge McCain for his long-held US Senate seat before leaving his radio job. Hayworth now says KFYI owner Clear Channel wanted him to leave – and paid off his contract.
