The fugitive financial backer of the Chicago Sports Webio captured in an Illinois motel
David Hernandez has been accused by Federal authorities of running an $11 million Ponzi scheme in his financial services business, and he was apprehended Monday in a Central Illinois motel. Hernandez, who was taken to a hospital for what the Chicago Tribune described as “an apparent failed suicide attempt,” was also the financial backer of the Chicago Sports Webio, an Internet sports-talk radio station, which has now gone silent. The Webio was the idea of former WSCR-AM (670) morning host Mike North. Financed by Hernandez, the Webio hired sports talker Chet Coppock and others. The U.S. attorney in Chicago has charged Hernandez with criminal mail fraud in relation to the Ponzi scheme. The Securities & Exchange Commission has also filed charges.
