The “Local Radio Freedom Act” is introduced in House and Senate

From today's TRI Newsletter: Last session, the NAB and its allies rolled up a large number of House members who said they'd oppose any new performance fees, taxes or royalties on radio. Now the NAB starts all over again with the new Congress, and this time the resolution (not a proposed law) is introduced in the House by Texans Mike Conaway and Gene Green. The Senate sponsors are John Barrasso of Wyoming and Ben Nelson of Nebraska. But the other side's been busy, too, and visible. At last year's NAB Show in Las Vegas, the performance royalty folks hired a message-bearing van to drive around the Convention Center, and there were protests and pickets by members of the local musician's union. Who knows what's ahead this year? The pro-royalty forces believe they've gotten closer and closer, each year. And what Congress mostly wants is for radio industry and the music industry to reach a negotiated settlement that will keep Congress from having to get involved and take sides.
