The New Zealand earthquake decimates radio stations in Christchurch
Radio is very slowly coming back in Christchurch after an earthquake ravaged the city of 350,000. The news site Scoop News reports major radio broadcasters Radio New Zealand, Radioworks and The Radio Network all have Christchurch studios blocked off as engineers continue to determine if the buildings housing their studios are safe. NewstalkZB has been broadcasting at vastly reduced power and on alternate frequencies after their tower sunk into the ground after it liquefied following the earthquake. A number of other stations, including RDU 98.5, are broadcasting from temporary studios, and some community stations remain off the air completely because their buildings were heavily damaged or destroyed. Radio Ferrymead (1413-AM) is one of the stations broadcasting automated programming after their offices and studios sustained moderate damage. The earthquake, which occurred February 22, killed at least 163 people, but still more are unaccounted for.
