The UK's Global Radio will reorganize its "Heart" stations – and cut 200 jobs

Global Radio

The current 33 “Heart” branded radio stations operated throughout the U.K. By Global Radio will be chopped down to 15 “super stations,” according to the Guardian newspaper. The resulting restructuring will also lead to the loss of over 200 full-time and freelance jobs. The plan is to have each of the 15 “Heart” stations produce their own morning and afternoon drive time shows, but all other programming will continue to come out of London from Global Radio, while the hourly daytime newscasts will be increased from 30 seconds to 60 seconds. The Global Radio changes come following British broadcast regulator OFCOM’s relaxing of local ownership rules and regulations in April, which includes co-locating to cut costs and allowing cuts to local programming. Global Radio founder/CEO Ashley Tabor tells the newspaper that OFCOM’s new rules enable “commercial radio to organize itself more efficiently and take advantage of new technology to enable our people to work smarter.” Among some of the bigger changes for listeners will be combining five existing Heart stations in Devon to make a single station run out of Exeter. Four Heart stations in Wales and the north-west of England will become Heart North-West and Wales, broadcasting from Wrexham.
