The Westboro Baptist Church didn’t get on the air at Miami’s WIOD (610)
From today's TRI Newsletter: WIOD morning jock Jimmy Cefalo decided, spur of the moment, just to hang up. He’d made the Supreme Court’s free speech decision about the controversial Phelps-family protesters his prime topic through the morning, and was just about to put one of them on the air when he changed his mind. You can hear a podcast of the non-conversation here. Some talkshow hosts have been willing to put members of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church on the air, either to explain why they picket the funerals of dead soldiers or in exchange for an agreement to back off on a particular protest. But Cefalo decided he didn’t like the deal, and you can hear the Phelps family member say “Ah” – when she realized she wasn’t going to get on the air. Clear Channel South Florida Director of AM programming Ken Charles says “the response from our audience on Facebook and on emails has been outstanding.” The Miami-Ft. Lauderdale Board of Radio-Info.com is talking about it now, here.
