Tornadoes in the Deep South, and broadcasters respond
Also responding: the Alabama Broadcasters Association. Its Sharon Tinsley posted this note on the Alabama Board of Radio-Info.com: "Please let me know of any stations off the air, damaged or otherwise. We would like to coordinate help for them if needed." The ABA's contact information: Phone 205-982-5001 and STinsley@al-ba.com.
In Birmingham, the Clear Channel stations have been simulcasting talk WERC-FM (105.5) and its wall-to-wall coverage. Cox, whose gospel WAGG (610) lost a tower Wednesday, has been creating special emergency programming for its cluster of stations. Urban AC "Kiss 98.7" WBHK pulled the usual Tom Joyner Morning Show in favor of local coverage, for example. In Tuscaloosa, a tower is down at Clear Channel's country WTXT (98.1). Clustermate WZBQ (CHR "94.1 ZBQ") was doing wall-to-wall coverage Wednesday evening. The Alabama Board of Radio-Info.com continues to add information, including the word that as of Wednesday night, "the entire WVUA [University of Alabama] network appears to be off the air."
