Toronto's all-news CFTR-AM is the foundation for a cable TV news channel
Rogers Media announces they will create a new 24/7 news channel for cable, with the news content coming from their combined resources of TV, publishing and their all-news radio station, "680 News" CFTR-AM. The service, to be called the CityNews Channel, will cover the greater Toronto area and has been approved by the CRTC. Rogers Broadcasting President Scott Moore says, "We're taking the number one news radio format in Canada, 680 News, and bringing it to television under the brand of CityNews Channel. By incorporating our trailblazing and trusted news brands from CityNews, 680 News, and publishing - including Canada's most trusted news magazine, Maclean's - CityNews Channel is poised to be the destination local news channel." The CityNews Channel will go head-to-head with CP24, a rival all-news cable station. They are also expected to draw news content from Rogers-owned news stations in Vancouver and Calgary.
