Two AM's go to FM in New York City to cover Hurricane Irene

In order to enhance their signals and overall listeners during Hurricane Irene, both CBS Radio and Citadel moved their AM stations onto sister-FM stations in New York on Sunday. All-news "1010 WINS" WINS-AM was heard for several hours simulcasting on their FM sister-station, hot AC WWFS-FM (102.7). Down the dial, Citadel AM talker WABC-AM (770) also moved their signal to the FM dial, taking over hot AC WPLJ-FM (95.5). Also getting into the act was WABC television, which used sister-Disney-owned sports "ESPN 1050" WEPN-AM to broadcast the audio of their continuous TV coverage of Hurricane Irene. Were CBS and Disney reacting, in part, to the new presence of an FM all-newser on FM, Merlin Media's WEMP (101.9)? Radio-Info previously reported that WEMP also did a simulcast, but with an AM station - WFTL-AM (850) in West Palm Beach, Florida, which carried the "FM News 101.9" signal in South Florida - Discuss it.
