Two format changes ahead, as Univ. of South Florida buys Sarasota non-com WSMR
The University already operates non-commercial classical/jazz/news WUSF (89.7) in Tampa, and with the $1,275,000 purchase of WSMR, Sarasota at 89.1, it will re-focus the programming of WUSF on strictly news and information, with jazz overnight. WSMR becomes a full-time classical outlet. Its programming will also be carried on the HD-2 channel of WUSF. WUSF Public Media General Manager JoAnne Urofsky says the purchase of WSMR from Northwestern College Radio Network “will allow us to significant increase public media services for the people of west central Florida.” WSMR is a Class C2 facility that has been doing contemporary Christian. Its website says “Life 89.1 is going off the air” today and it’s holding a farewell “open house” for listeners from 9am to 5pm. Minnesota-based Northwestern announced last week it was selling its Sarasota station for financial reasons. Brokers working on the sale: Greg Guy of Patrick Communications for the seller and Public Radio Capital for buyer USF. The Tampa Board of Radio-Info.com was quick to pick up on the changes at WUSF and WSMR.
