Two RFE/RL reporters detained for three days in Egypt are released

RFE/RL It was soon after Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty reporters Robert Tate and Abdelilah Nuaimi arrived in Cairo to report on the unrest in Egypt's capital city that they were detained by police. Tate and Nuaimi, both U.K. nationals, were taken to a police station and held by Egyptian security forces for nearly 72 hours. RFE/RL reported that the pair had their equipment and phones confiscated by police and that it had little contact with them, except to know they were being detained. Tate, a Middle East correspondent for RFE/RL and Nuaimi, who works for the RFE/RL Iraq service, were both released late Sunday and will be leaving Egypt and heading to the RFE/RL headquarters in Prague. Tate says "whatever official statements you might hear about the situation of detained journalists, we were not treated well." Journalists of all media have been targeted by pro-government supporters during the uprising, including high-profile CNN correspondents Anderson Cooper and Christiane Amanpour, whose attacks were caught on camera, as well as a Fox News reporter and cameraman who were beaten.
