Two suitors emerge for Pittsburgh Pirates broadcast rights

With the Pittsburgh Pirates having one of their best seasons in years, a battle is emerging between Clear Channel and CBS Radio for the right to broadcast their games on the radio. Pirates baseball games currently air on news/talk WPGB-FM (104.7), owned by Clear Channel. The Post-Gazette newspaper speculates that Clear Channel will want to keep the Pirates, but move their games to another radio station next year. CBS Radio's all-sports KDKA-FM (93.7) would seem to be a logical fit for the team. However, CBS Radio currently broadcasts the Arena Football League's Pittsburgh Power and University of Pittsburgh sports, while Clear Channel has the rights to the NFL Steelers, NHL Penguins and baseball Pirates. CBS Radio picking up the rights to the Pirates could shift the sports balance of power between the two companies in the Steel City. The Pirates radio broadcast rights expire at the end of this current season. The Pittsburgh Board of Radio-Info.com is talking about the revived Pirates and their radio home, here.
