Uganda's government shuts four radio stations, blaming them for riots

The government has taken unprecedented measures following riots that killed more than 20 people. The government immediately banned all political debate programs on the radio, and also shut four stations. Kampala’s Central Broadcasting Service (CBS) was the first to be shut, followed by Catholic Church-run Radio Sapientia, Radio Akaboozi Ku Biiri and Ssuubi FM. The four stations were accused of “inciting violence” and “breaching "minimum broadcasting standards.” In addition, radio talk show host Kalundi Serumaga was arrested for “uttering seditious statements.” He was released after posting bail, but was hospitalized after he was allegedly beaten following his arrest. Hundreds have been arrested and injured by violence, considered the worst in Uganda’s history.
