Voting opens for this year's National Radio Hall of Fame – nominees are announced

There are four nominees in each of four categories, starting with “Local or Regional-Pioneer.” Those are Gary Burbank, long of WLW, Cincinnati. Art Laboe, the West coast oldies expert. Van Miller, who set a record among NFL announcers with one team, the Buffalo Bills. And Ed Walker, the Washington, D.C. personality who gained fame with “Ed’s Play it Again, Ed” on WMAL. In “National-Pioneer” – Dr. Demento, the king of syndicated novelty and comedy radio. Dick Orkin, consummate radio commercial production pro and creator of “Chickenman.” The CBS Radio series named “Suspense.” And the WLS Barn Dance, which brought country music and comedy to the Midwest beginning in 1924. In “Local or Regional-Active” – Terri Hemmert, long of WXRT, Chicago. Hawaii’s Tom Moffatt. Miami’s Neil Rogers (who just left WQAM this week). And talkshow host Wendy Williams, based in New York City, and close to launching a daytime TV show. In “National-Active” – Neal Boortz, syndicated talker based at WSB, Atlanta. Bob Brinker, longtime “Money Talk” host for Citadel Media Networks. Joey Reynolds, top 40 radio star in the 60s and now a talker for the WOR Radio Network. And PRI’s “This American Life” hosted by Ira Glass. Online balloting for the Chicago-based Radio Hall of Fame just opened and won’t close until August 1 – here.
