"We have adopted to some extent a victim mentality"

David Field at 2011 Radio Show Entercom CEO David Field (pictured) tells this morning's Dickstein Shapiro session at the RAB/NAB Radio Show that "if you look at the usage, radio is thriving, very much distinguished from other traditional media." Field picks up a session-opening theme from Wells Fargo analyst Marci Ryvicker: "We need to come up with a better narrative" about the brands and personalities of radio. The question of how radio is perceived came up repeatedly during the session, with Field saying it comes down to "whether a decisionmaker believes we're a vibrant industry, or whether we're roadkill."

Other prominent topics: The importance of being local. Hubbard Radio's Bruce Reese says success comes from "how hard we work the local" angle and "do we have enough people on the street?" He says radio can "control a lot of our own destiny", if it sees the opportunity. CBS Radio's Dan Mason says "We do our best, as an industry, when we focus on local. Mason says "if you look at the stations that win Marconis tonight, those are all great local stations."

On streaming: Bruce Reese says "streaming is an expectation the audience has of us, and there may be revenue opportunities." CBS Radio's Dan Mason agrees: "We have to be streaming", even if there is little financial upside.
