WGN, Chicago's Latest Change: Cochran Out, McConnell In

WGN Radio

In perhaps classic radio fashion, Steve Cochran was told after he finished up his midday show Friday that it was his last shift on the Tribune-owned talk station. Robert Feder reports the news on Vocalo.org, along with some relevant background: Cochran’s career at WGN (720) advanced soon after he was hired in 2000 when morning man Bob Collins was killed in a small-plane crash. Cochran was offered the morning job after Spike O'Dell left in 2008, but couldn’t come to terms. Feder says “A sour taste between Cochran and management lingered ever since.” Cochran’s contract was up next week. In mid-August, WGN welcomes new personality Mike McConnell, inbound from WLW, Cincinnati. On Friday it confirmed that McConnell will take take Cochran’s former 1-3 shift, following John Williams (9a-1pm). Until McConnell comes to Tribune Tower, WGN will use guest hosts when it’s not airing Cubs day games.
