"WGN Sports Night" won't only talk about sports

WGN radio (720) says the new show will have a “cast of co-hosts with David Kaplan, news anchor Andrea Darlas and big-name guests.” Kaplan was the focus of the longtime "Sports Central" that was disbanded last year and replaced by a general-interest talk show anchored by former Chicago City Clerk Jim Laski. That was under then-PD Kevin Metheny. Metheny is now gone and WGN general manager Tom Langmyer is building a new sports-and-more 7-10pm program around Kaplan. Some of the rotating group of co-hosts will be Cubs TV voice Len Kasper, sportswriters from the Chicago Tribune, and Big Ten Network personality Tim Doyle. WGN wants an evevning show that can wrap around its major play-by-play franchises: the baseball Cubs, NHL Blackhawks and Northwestern University Wildcats. Also at Tribune-owned WGN: the station renews Cubs radio broadcaster Pat Hughes for another five years. That announcement comes not long after the death of radio commentator Ron Santo.
