Will CBS Radio sell KFWB in Los Angeles?
CBS has already placed KFWB-AM (980) into a trust run by longtime radio industry veteran and former Shamrock executive Bill Clark. This move was made to comply with an FCC order after CBS bought a second TV station in LA. However, as the LA Business Journal points out, both CBS-owned KNX-AM (1070) and KFWB have shown double-digit revenue declines, and reports KFWB had $36 million in revenue in 2005, but just under $14 million in 2009, and the 2005 revenues for KNX have fallen from $40.4 million to $25.4 million last year, according to BIA/Kelsey. The format change from all-news to talk hasn’t helped, with KFWB dropping from 27th in the LA market before the talk switch to 38th place now, the lowest-rated CBS station in the market. As to what will happen next, one question will be can CBS get good value by selling KFWB, and what would the new owners do with the station? The LA Business Journal speculates “likely buyers for KFWB are foreign-language broadcasters – such as Spanish, Korean or even Persian – that would convert the station to music or talk radio.” Discuss it.
