WIP, Philadelphia "Wing Bowl 20" winner wolfed down 337 chicken wings
Japanese challenger Takeru Kobayashi smashed the old record in his first-ever appearance at the WIP (610/94.1) eating contest that has become a Philadelphia tradition. The morning team began it in 1993 as a response to the NFL Eagles once again missing the Bowl. Kobayashi is the six-time winner of the Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest in New York, and as he told WIP (through an interpreter) during the post-contest interview, he thinks he could do even better than 337 wings, next time. The non-traditional revenue event went well for CBS Radio’s WIP, which derives a great of money from it. The 6-10am event was broadcast live in front of 20,000 people at the Wells Fargo Center. Here is the general description of Wing Bowl by WIP host Al Morganti: “It’s Fellini meets the Hell’s Angels at a family picnic.”
