With an appeal denied, Toronto's CKLN (88.1) goes off the air

CKLN CKLN-FM (88.1), located on the campus of Ryerson University in Toronto, had their signal turned off Friday evening after losing an appeal in an Ontario court. The station had been cited numerous times by the CRTC for broadcast violations and license issues, and faced closure before appealing that decision in court. CKLN became the first station in Canada to play hip-hop when it launched "The Fantastic Voyage Show" in 1983, and was influential in promoting many of Canada's biggest hip-hop stars. The station made news in 2008 when it fired a number of volunteers and had infighting between competing boards of directors. Due to those conflicts, the school's student union withheld funds for CKLN, and in retaliation the station sued Ryerson University for the money. Earlier this year, the CRTC revoked the license for several breaches of the Broadcast Act, sending CKLN to court in an effort to block the station closure. The Star newspaper has more about the sign off of CKLN here. The Toronto Board of Radio-Info.com has been talking about CKLN since March, here.
