Women are making slow progress toward the GM's corner office, says new MIW study

In 2004, the percentage of female GMs across all AM/FM radio stations in the M Street Publications survey was 14.9%, and it grew to 15.8% by 2008. Now, as of January 2010, the percentage is 16.2%, with 1,179 of of the 10,730 stations in the research having women in the GM’s office. The Radio MIWs also isolate results for the top 100 markets, where the improvement is from 16.8% in 2008 to 17.3% today. MIW Radio Group spokesperson Heidi Raphael says the best opportunities in management for women continue to be in sales. That figure is at 30.5, though it hasn’t changed in five years. The study says “the greatest challenge for women in radio management continues to be as programmers” – women program 11.1% of all stations in the study, up from 10.7% in 2004. The MIWs' latest Gender Analysis Study is available here.
