WRKS New York and the Tom Joyner Morning Show Reunite
It's a major coup for the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. Starting February 7, it returns to Emmis Urban AC WRKS “98.7 Kiss FM." The station previously ran Joyner from 2001- 2003, but dropped him to make way for a local team. The Joyner show will have local flavor on Kiss, as long-time morning newsman Bob Slade will remain in the morning slot along with the syndicated crew, which is based out of Dallas. The Joyner Show fills a morning void on Kiss that has been up-in-the-air since comedian D.L. Hughley officially left the station in August of last year. The Hughley morning show was heard on WRKS for about a year, amidst lawsuits between the comedian, Emmis, and his original syndication company, URBan Radio. But with the move to bring Joyner back to Kiss, the station is directly targetting rival WBLS, which airs the syndicated Steve Harvey Show in morning drive. Alex Cameron, Emmis Communications’ SVP, Market Manager, says, “2011 marks 30 years for KISS FM as a dominant and trusted voice reflecting the tri-state’s African American adult community. In celebrating that, we are happy to welcome Tom Joyner to KISS FM with a show that shares the values of family and community. Our program director, Jill Strada, will have the ability to work directly with Tom and The Morning Show staff to collaborate on locality and music that directly affects and influences the KISS audience."
