WUUQ Chattanooga Fills Classic Country Format Hole

WUUQ Chattanooga, Tenn., has flipped formats, ditching its syndicated “Classic Top 40” offering from TKO Radio Network in favor of a locally originated classic country format. It kicked off Jan. 27 with Barbara Mandrell’s 1981 hit “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.” The station fills a format hole created when Clear Channel flipped its 98.1/WLND (the Legend) from classic country to hot AC last month, despite being in fourth place in the market 12-plus with a 7.1 share in the Fall ’09 Arbitrons. WUUQ is owned by 3 Daughters Media. It’s heard on two signals—97.3 plus a 99.3 FM translator on Lookout Mountain. The new classic country airstaff will include promotion manager Susie Luther in mornings, Scott Miller in middays and PD Dale Mitchell in afternoons. Chattanooga resident and country singer Roger Allen Wade has been tapped for imaging. CEO Gary Burns is promising “limited commercials” on the station, with no more than three units or 90 seconds in a stop set.
