Job Market Robust For Regional Record Promoters

Chris Palmer

The job market for radio broadcasters remains tough (one recent large market country PD opening is rumored to have drawn 400 applicants), but there’s much better news to report on the label side. The record promotion job market has been unusually robust of late, particularly among regionals. Despite the closure of quite a few labels in recent months, many of the regional promotion staffers from those labels have been scooped up very quickly into comparable—or even better—new jobs.

For instance, Lyric Street Records officially shut down on Aug. 20, but three of its regionals have already found other work. Just this week, West coast regional Kris Lamb joined Big Machine Records in a similar capacity and Southwest regional Neda Tobin has been hired at Red Light Management. Last week Midwest regional Michelle Tyrrell landed at MCA Nashville, where she is director of promotion/Northeast.

After Golden Music Nashville shut down in June, three of its regionals also landed elsewhere in just a few weeks or less. Lou Ramirez joined Warner Music Nashville as Southeast regional promotion manager, the same position he held at Golden. Midwest director of promotion and marketing Bill Heltemes quickly moved to Stroudavarious Records. And Stacy Rogers joined Stoney Creek Records as manager of regional promotion, West coast, the same region she handled for Golden.

Less than two weeks after leaving Warner Music Nashville, where he was the longtime Southeast regional, promotion veteran Brooks Quigley joined Nine North Records in July as director of promotion Southeast/Southwest.

Former Stoney Creek Records regional Bill Lubitz was on the beach just 10 weeks before joining Quarterback Records as director of promotion Southwest/West this week.

Finally, back in May after senior director of national promotion Chris Palmer(pictured) was let go in the first round of layoffs leading to Lyric Street’s eventual closure, it took him just a month to nail down a new gig at a higher level. He’s now VP of promotions at Warner Music Nashville.

Of course, there are still dozens of record promotion pros on the job hunt who shouldn’t be forgotten about, and way fewer jobs than qualified applicants. But it’s sure nice to have some positive job market news to report for a change.
