This essay, Williams Riley On A ‘Roll’, was written by Phyllis Stark for Radio-Info.com's Country column.
Williams Riley On A ‘Roll’
Golden Music Nashville’s flagship band, Williams Riley, raced into the studio following the New Orleans Saints Super Bowl win to update their Saints-themed song, “Who Dat Roll” (now titled “Who Dat Roll (Just Won the Super Bowl”). Members of the band hail from Louisiana and are huge fans of the football team. The song title is based on the Cajun exclamation “Who dat say they’re gonna beat dem Saints?”
The band’s earlier version had been garnering TV and radio airplay since being released when the Saints reached the 12-0 mark this season. On the new version, the last line of the chorus was changed from “We’re shootin’ for the Super Bowl” to “Just won the Super Bowl.”
The new version is already garnering spins at country stations KMDL Lafayette, La., KXKS Shreveport, La., and WFUS Tampa, Fla., among several others. The label’s executive VP, promotion and marketing, Lisa Strickland, reports some airplay on AC and classic rock stations as well. She also says they’ve seen a bit of airplay in Canada, and the label even received a request for the song from Australia the day after the Super Bowl.
Williams Riley drummer and Louisiana native Travis Thibodaux penned the song with his father, Gary Paul and friend Shea Michaels. A portion of the proceeds from download sales of the song are being donated to the Katrina Relief Fund.
