What is Urban EMO? Let’s start with EMO – or chill music as some refer to it. Wikipedia says it’s “a style of rock music characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics.” Take out the words “rock music” and plug in “hip-hop or R&B,” and you have a description for any number of songs we’re hearing today by artists like Drake, Lil’ Wayne or Miguel. But like new wave music’s influence on R&B acts such as Prince, Cameo, or Rick James in the ‘80s, we have to ask, will this be a passing fad?
