Radio 3D - FutureVision Realized

By Daniel Anstandig, President, McVay New Media and Listener Driven Radio

A philosopher from the turn of the twentieth century, Thomas Troward, once said, “The science of floatation was not discovered by contemplating the sinking of things.” Similarly, contemplating today’s failures will not lead to the discovery of new successful ideas and strategies. Radio 3D is about realizing a vision for our industry’s future. Every week, we will share a perspective of prosperity for radio and the people it serves. I hope you’ll walk away with a new idea or a thought about approaching your role differently. If you’re not personally pleased today with your position, I hope Radio3D will expand the possibilities of how you can bring value to the industry and find a position in our transforming business that fits your passion and unique gifts.

It’s called the UK Radioplayer project, a collaboration of the BBC, Radio Centre, Global Radio and Guardian Media Group. It will group as many as 400 Ofcom-licensed national, local, community and student stations in the U.K. According to MediaBuyer, the new radio will include a “search engine…to allow users to search by program type – for news, sports, specific music genres or even individual songs.” The new software is due for release early next year. One reason – U.K. online radio revenue is expected to grow 12% this year, to $441 million, says SNL Kagan.

The goal is “performance acceleration” done in collaboration with senior management. The principals of ClearWater are Gayle Treichel Bunge, Dennis Douglass and Heather Richetto-Rumley. Managing Partner Richetto-Rumley is at Heather@ClearwaterPG.com, and the website is here.

Wendy Williams gets a new commitment from Fox TV

The former syndicated radio host, whose show originated from Inner City’s Urban WBLS (107.5) New York, has learned that her TV-talk show has a commitment from Fox TV to run through the 2011-2012 season. Williams left WBLS and her Westwood syndicated radio show behind this past summer to concentrate on the television show. She was also recently inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame at the November 7th gala in Chicago. Williams' talk show is one of several which hit the television airwaves this year. BET (which also airs Williams show at night) debuted the Mo’Nique Show, hosted by comedian and former radio show host Mo’Nique. Singer/Songwriter and current syndicated radio show host Brian McKnight (whose night show is based out of Emmis Urban AC WRKS New York) has a syndicated variety/talk show. One who is no longer in the TV-talk show biz? Citadel Media’s syndicated afternoon man Michael Baisden, whose former show was dropped by TV One.

Consolidation in Billings, Montana: Cherry Creek Radio sells to Connoisseur

Cherry Creek owns three stations: classic rock KRKX (94.1), “Today’s New Rock/Zone 96.3” KRZN, and news/talk KBLG (910). While buyer Connoisseur Media has two FMs – CHR “Planet 106.7” KPLN and classic hits “My 105.9” KWMY (the former country/rock “Bar” KPBR). Connoisseur will start operating the Zone and KBLG on Friday (November 20) and then KRKX on December 1. That’s necessary because on November 30, Connoisseur is ending its LMA of Chaparral’s 92.5, where it’s been operating “My 92.5” for the past three years. Otherwise, Connoisseur would be over the FCC’s local-market limit for FMs, with five. No new format yet at 92.5, which the Billings Gazette says will be simulcasting with 105.9 through the end of November. Joe Schwartz of Cherry Creek Radio says “The Billings market needed a consolidation of ownership….we're pleased that our good friends at Connoisseur had the interest and resources to take on our stations and to continue serving the community.” No price announced for the deal brokered by Kalil & Co.

Britain's media watchdog recommends relaxing ownership rules

Ofcom_related_scaled

OFCOM, which oversees the U.K.’s broadcasting companies, says the state of the economy means it’s appropriate to ease the local cross-media ownership rules, which do not allow for “owning all three from the following – local newspapers with over 50% of the local market share, a local radio station and a regional Channel 3 (ITV) license,” says the BBC. In addition, OFCOM wants to relax what it calls “multiplex ownership rules” for the DAB service and the local radio ownership rules. New limits could lead to a drastic consolidation of radio, allowing a large number of local commercial radio stations to be owned by one operator in a specific local area. Any changes to the media ownership rules must be passed by Parliament and made into law by the government.

Other

Repetition, Redundancy, and Social Media

Social-media-waste-of-time_related_scaled
One of the real powerful aspects of social media is that it creates so many more touchpoints between a radio station and its listeners. In the old days, there were just a few—the live interaction at events, the telephone, postal mail, and the actual broadcast itself. Today, you can add Twitter feeds, blogs, email, RSS feeds, Facebook updates, text messaging, and even things like embedded video or other content around the web. While this ability to connect with the listener on so many new levels is powerful, it also requires a greater attention to things that we never would have considered a problem: Overdelivering a message or delivering via the wrong method.

Measuring Success

Games are more fun when you keep score—and the way you’re keeping score is going to be important in 2010. RETHINKING MEASUREMENT is an important undertaking for the media industry, and there’s already plenty of shifting in progress—from PPM to Streaming Measurement. Two of radio’s largest “metrics vendors,” Arbitron and Ando Media, have both earned headlines this year for their maneuvers in measurement. While they’ve drawn some heat from customers and buyers—and various debates rightfully continue about each of their practices—they both deserve some applause.

Boards Buzz: Radio One's new station websites

Over the past two years, Radio-Info.com has become a respected source for news and information. But it also has another unique element. The Discussion forums. These forums are a great source of information for me by providing news leads - which I can then confirm or deny by making follow up calls. But they’re also a great source of ideas for feature stories and a barometer for what radio people are thinking about our industry. Each week I’ll take a look at what the hot topics are in the Urban world, straight from the Radio-Info.com boards.
