In Chicago, Derrick Brown, OM for Clear Channel’s urban trio urban AC WVAZ “V103”, Urban WGCI (107.5), and gospel WGRB (1390), will add PD duties for urban WGCI. He also serves as PD of WVAZ. PD/midday personality Kris Kelly will assume APD duties under Brown. In addition, the Chicago Tribune reports that Clear Channel announced it will unify the three stations under one single advertising banner called the Urban Network, meaning they will “offer marketers a single cross-platform opportunity to reach Chicago’s African-American audience through radio, digital and event marketing even as programming on WGCI, “V103" and “Inspiration 1390” continue to target different parts of that group.” Earl Jones, President and Market Manager for Clear Channel Chicago told the newspaper “For African Americans (age 18 and older) we beat ABC, Fox, CBS and NBC in this market,” Jones said. “If you want to reach an African American … you cannot overlook this capacity here that we have.” Previously, Clear Channel Radio Chicago had WGCI, top 40 WKSC-FM (103.5) and Spanish-language WNUA-FM 95.5 grouped together based on their penetration in the age 18-34 and 18-49 demographics, while WVAZ, WGRB and AC WLIT-FM 93.9 were sold as a way to reach listeners age 25 to 54.

WGCI, Chicago will welcome "The Morning Riot" April 1

This morning, Clear Channel urban WGCI (107.5) announced its new morning show – “the Morning Riot" – comprised of Tony Sculfield, Leon Rogers and Nina Chantele. The trio replaces the syndicated Steve Harvey Show, which moved over to urban AC sister WVAZ “V103” earlier this week. Sculfield has been handling afternoons on WGCI. Rogers moves from nights to mornings, while Chantele is new to the team. Since the announcements earlier this week that Clear Channel was shifting Harvey to WVAZ, displacing the long running syndicated Tom Joyner Show, rumors have been circulating as to where Joyner may resurface. Chicago was his largest market, and considered his home—since he’d been heard on the air here for almost thirty years. Radio-Info.com hears there are strong possibilities that he’ll end up on Crawford’s “Power 92,” WPWX.

More morning show news out of Chicago, as Clear Channel Urban AC WVAZ “V103” has decided to drop long time syndicated morning man Tom Joyner. They will move Premiere Radio Networks syndicated “Steve Harvey Show” from Urban sister WGCI (107.5) over to V103, starting immediately. That means WGCI will also have a new wake up show, and Radio-Info.com hears it will be WGCI veteran and local morning flavor guy for the Harvey show, Tony Schofield, who will fill the slot. Joyner sent a message to listeners in Chicago on his website BlackWebAmerica.com.

The Clear Channel axe strikes Chicago

WVAZ_ChicagoIt seems like the company is making its year-end cuts market by market, this time in Chi-town. The Sun Times' Robert Feder reports that Armando Rivera, long-time APD/MD at urban AC WVAZ "V103", as well as WGCI night jock "The Diz", whose real name is Victor Blackful, are both out. Night co-host Frankie Robinson remains, and will be joined by current morning traffic reporter Leon Rogers. At top 40 sister WKSC "Kiss FM", overnight host Alexx Dupri, as well as morning show producer Pete Gallindo, are both gone. Market Manager Earl Jones told Feder, "We are re-expressing our assets to achieve greater results." ##discussit##
