Pirate Cat Radio, which was operating at 87.9FM, has ceased terrestrial broadcasting following the FCC handing down a $10,000 fine and issuing a cease-and-desist order. Unlike some other pirate radio stations, Pirate Cat Radio wasn’t difficult to find. Their website contains the San Francisco address where people can buy coffee and donate to keep the “low powered, unlicensed community radio station” on the air. The founder of Pirate Cat Radio, named “Monkey,” wrote on the website the FCC “should be helping organizations like ours to obtain a license and continue serving our communities, not to fine us and attempt to destroy a community resource.” While Pirate Cat Radio will have to deal with the fine, the FCC will have to remember a cat may have nine lives.
