Last week Radio-Info.com reported that Border Media Partners “run by its lenders through Border Media Business Trust” was about to make format changes at its Austin cluster when it laid off the air staff at Regional Mexican KHHL “La Ley 98.9” and Spanish Contemporary “Digital” simulcast of KXXS (92.5) and KXBT (104.9). Austin manager Jerry Del Core lays out the plan for the Austin Statesman American: Digital 104.9 KHHL, Dripping Springs, Texas ditches the Spanish CHR to become an ESPN-affiliated sports station. Border Media will simulcast some of the day with Simmons Media’s “ESPN Sports 1530” KZNX, Creedmoor, as Border LMAs both of the Simmons sports stations. Those are KZNX at and local Radio Deportes Spanish-sports affiliate KWNX at 1260. Border’s 104.9 will add in some local sports talk and use the station name “The Horn.” For now, it will simulcast on KXXS, Elgin at 92.5. The other change is BMP’s KXBT at 98.9, which goes English-language talk. It used to do regional Mexican as “La Ley.” Its lineup of syndicated and local talkers includes Sammy Allred – who’s expected to invite famous Austin resident Willy Nelson on as a special guest.
